Which Way to the Coliseum?

free christian music download

Within two years after recording Whose Fool Are You? I had found more to say. I think I had more fun on this album than any I’ve ever done, not least because I got to work with Stephanie again, as well as Angie Tucker, Sam Ladd, a group of fantastic kids and teachers from Coastal Christian School, and my dear friend, the remarkable Julie Daggett who was to become my performing partner for three years. The album was recorded over a period of months at various studios in Maine and was engineered by Sonny True, who was able to make me sound much better than I am. The singers mentioned above constituted a group I called Whirlwind and we toured churches, coffee houses, festivals and other venues around New England for a year or so. Traveling, learning, and growing with these wonderful folks was a great experience, for which I am most deeply grateful. I think you will enjoy the results of our efforts on this album.

Following are full-length MP3s of the songs on this album. If you are able, please donate $1.00 for each track you download to Peer Servants (click the “Donate” tab on their website). They’re a wonderful, worthy, and trustworthy ministry with which we have worked extensively over the years. If you can’t afford the dollar, you’re welcome to download the music at no charge. Simply click the Click here to download text following each title, and right-click the resulting progress bar to download. You may use the songs in ministry, but may not re-record them or profit from them financially in any way. That’s fair, don’t you think?

Following the MP3s below, you will find the lyrics to all the songs. Chord sheets (.pdf files) for each song are available as well, for $2.95, or the whole album for $24.95. Send your request to davidcrossman@comcast.net

HOLD ON TO MY HAND

Chorus

Hold on to my hand
Hold on to my hand
Hold on to my hand
And I’m gonna take you
To the Promised Land

No one said it would be easy
But that doesn’t mean
You have to go alone
Hold on, even in the desert
Soon the water will be
Gushin’ from a stone

Refrain

God is so good, God is so good,
God is so good, He’s so good to me
He will provide, He will provide
He will provide everything I need

Chorus

Hold on when you are surrounded
And there isn’t any way to get out
That’s when God will do a wonder
And you start to learn
What faith is all about

Chorus/Refrain

UNDIVIDED HEART

Teach me your way Lord
And I will walk in Your truth
Give me an undivided heart (2x)
And I will praise You
Oh my Lord, my God
With all my strength (2x)

And I will glorify
Your name forever
Give me an undivided heart (2x)

JESUS, TAKE MY HAND

Jesus, take my hand
I’m as lonely as a child
Searching for my way back home
Every other light
Fell a victim to the night
And left me in the dark alone

Now there’s nowhere left to turn
Jesus, if You’re really there
Heal this broken life of mine
Free me from these chains of sin
Show me how to trust again
Here I am, Here I am

Jesus, lead me on, show me where to turn
I don’t know which way to go
I have been so blind
Show me what I have to find
Turn this hopeful heart toward home

Now there’s nowhere left to turn
Jesus, if You’re really there
Heal this broken life of mine
Free me from these chains of sin
Show me how to trust again
Here I am, here I am

THE PROMISE

My Lord I promise You
I’ll be a man of honor
And I’ll honor You
In all that I say and all that I do
I will try my best to be like You

My wife I promise you
I always will be faithful
And be there for you
Whenever you need
A husband in deed
I will always, be there loving you

Chorus

The Spirit is a witness
To these promises
Jesus is my strength
When I am weak
God is my Creator
And He knows my heart
So help me God
To live these words I speak
So help me God
To live these words I speak

My child I promise you
I’ll be the best example
I can be for you
In times good and bad
Just come to your dad
And with God’s help
We will see it through

My friend I promise you
I’ll not betray a confidence
Or forsake you
There’s a Rock where I stand
Take hold of my hand
You can trust me
To be there for you

Chorus

My church I promise you
I’ll be a man of healing and of help to you
Never divide, always confide
I will do my best to honor you

Chorus

GOLDEN ROADS

Show me what it’s gonna be like
To be walkin’ those golden roads
When I get to heaven
I’m gonna jump down, turn around
Lay my burden down
Find me a big fluffy cloud and fly

Chorus

Put down the weapons
I been carryin’ Pick up my crown, yeah
Sit in the shadows by the riverbank
And croon like a loon at the moon

I don’t need no halo and wings
All I need is to see Your face
Smilin’ down upon me
Give me heart skippin’ back flippin’
Double dip’ve heavenly joy

Put down the flesh
That I been draggin’ with me
Pick up my robe, yeah
Washed in the heavenly detergent
Make me glow, status quo white as snow

Chorus

THIS MAGIC LIFE

This magic life, these fleeting days
These desperate hours
That turn to shadows and to sand
These are our lives

These sacred hopes,
These bitter fears
These tangled threads that weave
The fabric of our years
These are our lives

Refrain

What will happen when it’s ended
What if I should die tonight?
Would I stand alone
To face the darkness
Or would I simply cease to be
Or will I find eternity in me?

These fragile dreams
These tender times
These precious seconds
Dressed in discord and in rhyme
These are our lives

This web of lies, these petty dreads
The things we left unspoken
And the things we said
These are our lives

Things are not the way I planned them
Somehow I have lost control
Will I stand alone to face the darkness
Or will I simply cease to know
Or will I find, too late, I have a soul?

Refrain

WITH A SHOUT
by Bill Gautsch

God is gone up with a shout
Jehova with the sound of the trumpet
Sing praises to God, sing praises
Sing praises unto the King, sing praises

Chorus

And I will join them in their dance
And I will meet them in their praise
Sweep the ashes from their hearts
And draw them closer all their days

God is King of all the earth
Sing ye praises with understanding
God reigneth over the nations
God sitteth upon His holy throne

Chorus

The princes of the people
Are gathered together
To be the people of the God of Abraham
For the shields of the earth belong to God
He is greatly exalted, He is greatly exalted

Chorus

LATE AT NIGHT

Late at night when I can’t fall asleep
I lay there in the darkness and I wonder
What it would be like
If You were sitting there
In that old rockin’ chair

I wonder what You’d think of me
I wonder if You’d wonder if
I mean the things I say
‘Cause I’m always half asleep when I pray

But Jesus, Lord, I want You to know
That I really do, love You
And Jesus, Lord, I want You to know
That I really do, love You

From time to time, when I can’t fall asleep
I lay there in the darkness and imagine
What it would be like
If you were sitting there
In that old rockin’ chair

I wonder if You’d
Shake Your head in wonder
To see what I’ve become
At times I almost wish my race was done

But Jesus, Lord, I want You to know
That I really do, love You
And Jesus, Lord, I want You to know
That I really do, love You

WE SAY THINGS

We says things, so often we say things
Without thinking
Then, just as the arrow leaves the string
We think:

“How could I have said
The things that I said
How could I have been so cruel?
How could I have done the things that I did?
And how do I ask forgiveness from you?”

I could tell the arrow hit you
I could see it in your eyes
I could tell that you’d
Been wounded in the heart

And I know the trust between us
Had been broken at that moment
Oh, how I wish the arrow’d missed it’s mark

For we say things, so often we say things
Without thinking, then, just as the arrow
Leaves the string we think

“How could I have said
The things that I said
How could I have been so cruel?
How could I have done
The things that I did?
And how do I ask forgiveness from you?”

I could tell the arrow hit you
I could see it in your eyes
I could tell that you’d
Been wounded in the heart
And I know the trust between us
Had been broken at that moment
Oh, how I wish the arrow’d missed it’s mark

NO FAIR!

Chorus

No fair! Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme (3x)
I wanna, wanna, wanna, wanna
Wah, wah, wah, wah

Give me what I deserve
You know I want what’s comin’ to me
I demand my rights, right now
You been holdin’ out and if
You don’t give me what I want
I’m gonna stop believin’
I’m gonna stop believin’ in You

Chorus

God I think You need to be
Apprized of situations
You don’t seem to be attentive to my needs
‘Cause there You are with everything
And here I am with nothin’
And that doesn’t seem so awfully fair to me
What about me, God?

Chorus

If You won’t yield to my demands
I’ll get up a petition
And report You to the A.C.L.U
They’ll recommend a lawyer
And I’m certain he’ll advise me
I should take out a subpoena and
Sue You, sue You

Sayin’ God’s not fair…(etc.)
Wait a minute, God
I didn’t see the light had changed
You see, I have so many things upon my mind
I didn’t see the trailer truck
Was comin’ to a stop
I didn’t think that I would
Smash him from behind
Hey God, no fair!

Chorus

Well now it’s come to Judgement Day
I’m standin’ here before You
And I feel a tad repented, I confess
So, if you want to slap my wrist
Or tell me I was naughty
Then I really don’t suppose
I would protest. But, please God

Don’t be fair. Don’t gimme what I got comin’
Dont’ be fair. Don’t gimme what I deserve
Don’t be fair. Don’t gimme what I got comin’
I can’t take the heat, and I don’t have the nerve!

I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL

Your heart is broken, I know how you feel
My heart’s been broken, too
Your body’s hurting, I know how you feel
I have felt pain, like you

And though It may not seem
That I am with you now
There’s just too much going wrong
For there to be a God who loves you

“Father, can’t You see I need you now?”

“Here I am, where I’ve always been
And I will never leave
Trust in me, and Keep holding to my hand
When it’s hardest to believe.”

Life gets so lonely, I know how you feel
I’ve been forsaken, too
You’re disappointed
Your dreams have turned to dust
Perhaps they were just keeping Me from you

And though it may not seem
That I am with you now
And there’s no one in the night
To put His arms around you

“Father, can’t you see I need you now?”

“Here I am, where I’ve always been
And I will never leave trust in me, and
Keep holding to my hand
When it’s hardest to believe.”

THIS AIN’T SIN

Oh this ain’t sin, it’s just a little habit
It ain’t like I was Hitler or Idi Amin
No, this ain’t sin, it’s just my little treat
It’s just a little somethin’ I like
Oh, a little somethin’ I like

But this ain’t sin, no it’s only a movie
What’s a little nudity
And murder and mayhem?
Oh, this ain’t sin, no, it’s socially redeeming
You just pay your admission
And you walk right in, oh, you walk right in

Refrain

You call that sin? Well act your age
It’s the new millennium
And things have changed

You call that sin?
Sister, where have you been?
As long as it don’t hurt nobody
It’s okay. Oh, it’s okay

This ain’t sin, it’s my natural inclination
My personal proclivities are
None of your business
This ain’t sin, no it’s hereditary
There’s nothin’ I could do about it anyway
No, couldn’t help it anyway

But this ain’t sin, no Oprah Winfrey says so
Dr. Ruth commends it and Dear Abby agrees
No, this ain’t sin, in fact, I’ve grown to love it
And I’m prepared to flaunt it for the world to see
We’ll let the whole world see!

You call that sin?
This ain’t the Middle Ages
Everything is relative
And everything’s right
If your God don’t like it
Well, I think He’s got a problem
Like, He’s a century or two
Behind the times
Oh He’s way behind the times!

Refrain

THANK YOU

Thank You for unanswered prayers
For the times You seem so distant
That I cannot feel You there

Thank You, for the worry and doubt
When the thing I most desire
Is what I must do without

Refrain

For times like these
Will bring me to my knees

And draw me ever closer
Draw me ever closer to You

Thank you for the privilege of pain
For the fires of frustration
And the fears that I must face

Thank you, for the battles I fight
For the wars that rage within me
In the reaches of the night

Refrain

SUDDENLY I FELT LOVED

I didn’t hear a voice
I didn’t have a revelation met no angels,
Had no vision saw no miracles

Nobody spoke to me
Nobody mystically transformed me
No one healed me, no one sealed me
With a holy kiss,

But I know this
Suddenly I felt loved

Chorus

Suddenly I felt loved. Suddenly I belonged
Suddenly I believed. And suddenly
In my weakness, I was strong

I am not very wise
I can’t explain the grace that saved me
How the dead can rise, the lame can walk
The blind can see

It doesn’t make much sense
It takes a difference understanding
Different feelings, different longings
Somehow everything has changed

But I know this…suddenly I felt loved

Chorus

YOU DIDN’T SING

You didn’t sing when we played the music
You didn’t dance when we played the dance
You didn’t cry when we played the dirges
Or laugh when you had the chance

So sad when a heart is frozen
So sad when a mind won’t change
When it’s so trapped in the traditions of men
You cannot see the better way

You’ve got to put, put aside your cold heart
You’ve got to put on the love of Christ
You’ve got to think of the grace
That was given to you
And let it overflow your life

There are things that are wrong and right
That’s true…and they’re written in the word
But tradition tramples the flower of truth
Before the truth is ever heard

MY PSYCHIC FRIEND

I’m havin’ trouble with my life
And my wife and my kids and my dog don’t understand
What I need’s a helping hand
I just need someone who will tell me what to do, do,do
I just get so confused
Maybe tea leaves or a crystal ball
Or Tarot cards
Will show me my way through it all
Get me through it all
But who do I call?

Then I saw it on the TV – Dionne –
Said I ought to call the Hot Line
Right now
Said she knew just who to turn to
In these times of crisis someone who
Will be my friend, well that’s
Just what I needed
Someone warm and understanding
Best of all it’s only gonna cost me
Four bucks a minute
Nothin’ but the facts
And it won’t set me back
More than four bucks a minute
Plus tax

So I call, 1-900-GULLIBLE
I hear the telephone ring
And the operator says
“Have your credit card close at hand.”

While I wait they play some music
Dionne,
Do You Know the Way to San Jose?
I’m breathless with anticipation
Eager for emancipation
From these trial oh and, and all these woes
Then the music stops
I hear a click
A voice comes on
My heart is pounding

“Hello,” she says. “I’m Cleopatra your psychic friend.
“To whom am I speaking?”

“’To whom are you speaking?’”

Well, I held the telephone out
And I’m sure I looked incredulous
“What do you mean?” I said
“You’re the one who’s s’posed to tell me
What to do, plan all my moves
And you don’t even know my name
Well, Sister you ain’t all that’s advertised.”

So I hung up the telephone
Fell on my knees and closed my eyes, to pray
Fell on my knees and closed my eyes, to pray
Fell on my knees and closed my eyes
