BIRTH OF AN ALBUM – While I was singing with the praise team at North River Community Church, in Pembroke, Massachusetts, the music director, Connie Wagner (a wonderful person, by the way), was stuck for a song that would dovetail with an upcoming sermon topic which was, more or less, about being a missionary wherever you are. That night, after practice, I sat down at the piano and wrote Africa, which I presented to Connie some days later. And so began a process that gave birth to all of the material on this album as I wrote songs to match Paul Atwater’s sermons and the accompanying skits. Within a year I’d written an album’s worth of material and some members of the congregation, feeling the songs might be of benefit to others, suggested I make an album. I suggested they pay for it. They agreed. Here it is. Recorded at Mark Five studios in Greenville, South Carolina, arranged by the exceptional Charlie Miller, and engineered by Rick Sandidge, the man with the golden ear. Joining me on vocals are Cindy Murphy-Orr, Dana Russell, Bill Gautsch, Jon Fagerstrom, and several others who happened to wander in from the neighboring studio from time to time. The lyrics for all the songs can be found in the scrolling window at the bottom of this page. Enjoy! David A. Crossman

Following are full-length MP3s of the songs on this album. If you are able, please donate $1.00 for each track you download to Peer Servants (click the “Donate” tab on their website). They’re a wonderful, worthy, and trustworthy ministry with which we have worked extensively over the years. If you can’t afford the dollar, you’re welcome to download the music at no charge. Simply click the Click here to download text following each title, and right-click the resulting progress bar to download. You may use the songs in ministry, but may not re-record them or profit from them financially in any way. That’s fair, don’t you think?

Following the MP3s below, you will find the lyrics to all the songs. Chord sheets (.pdf files) for each song are available as well, for $2.95, or the whole album for $24.95. Send your request to davidcrossman@comcast.net

AFRICA

Oh I could go to Africa
I think that they could use some more
People like me
I think I should be in Africa
Now picture me in khaki pants
A-joining in a tribal dance
Just call me ‘bwana Dave’
Come visit my cave
When you’re in Africa

Quiet now I think I hear
The Spirit callin’
And I’m sure that
If I listen closely
He will tell me He wants me
To go to Africa

Spirit: David
David: Yes, Lord?
Spirit: I want you to go to…Cleveland

Cleveland? He said that I
Should go to Cleveland
What’s in Cleveland?
Cleveland? Must be a bad connection
Unless He means a
Cleveland I don’t know about
Some long forgotten tribe
Somewhere in Africa

You see, I really had in mind
A mission of another kind
Something not so mundane
If Africa is full
Then I’ll take…Spain!

Quiet now I think I hear
The Spirit callin’
And I’m sure that
If we listen closely
This time we’ll hear Him say
“Go thou to Africa!”

Spirit: David
David: Yes, Lord
Spirit: I want you to go to Boise
Boise? It sounded like
You said that I should go to Boise
Oh boy, I must have
Another spirit on the line
‘Cause I belong in Africa

Spirit, it’s me, You know
The one who has decided
…I mean
I’ve been praying awfully hard about it
And I’m sure that I belong in Africa
Africa. You know. Africa
Spirit: David
David: Yes, Lord
Spirit: I want you to stay
Right where you are

JUST LIKE A REED

Just like a reed I can bruise easily
I’m not a rock, and my roots don’t go deep
Shelter me from the wind
There are holes in my armor
Where the arrows get in

Life is hard enough as it is day to day
I stumble and fall on the stones in my way
Please, don’t throw stones in my way
There are many hidden edges
On the words that you say

And words are like weapons
They maim and they wound
But Jesus would use them
To heal and to soothe

Be like Him to me
Look at me through Jesus eyes
And tell me what do you see?
Just like a reed, I can bruise easily

YOU GOTTA KEEP CLIMBIN’

I’m gonna tell you a story
‘Bout a man named Abram
God made him a promise
That he would have a son
God said: “I ain’t foolin’
Tell your wife to stop laughin’.”
God made Abe a daddy
When he was a hundred and one

(Chorus)
Now that takes patience
And a lot of persistence
Oh you gotta keep climbin’
If you wanna get up the hill
Oh you gotta keep climbin’
Don’t give up the promise, no, no
If you make it through
You can prove your faith was real

Now God said to Moses
When they were in the desert
“Now, Mo, I know that days are hot
And the nights are cold
I know those children of Israel
Fuss and fret and fight
But, Mo, hang on
You’ve still got 40 years to go.”

(Chorus)

Now let me tell you ‘bout David
And the prophet Samuel
Now Sam said, “Dave
God said some interestin’ things.
He said; ‘now Davey
Just be strong and faithful
One day you won’t be a shepherd anymore
You’ll be the king.”

(Chorus)

Now let me tell you ‘bout Jesus
Oh, here is the best one
‘Cause He made you and me a promise
Years ago; He made a promise
And he put it in writing
He said: “One day I’m gonna come
And take you home!”

(Chorus)

HIGHER GROUND
with Dana Russell
The fear of the Lord
Is the beginning of wisdom
So Lord, make me wise
In Your eyes

Not as the world is wise
That’s just the stuff
Of dreams and lies
Take me to the higher ground
And let me see
There is only One who’s wise
And they called Him a fool

Take me to the higher ground
And make me such a fool
Take me to the higher ground
And make me such a fool (Repeat)

SHOW ‘EM WHAT THE LORD CAN DO

Well a small caravan rolled across the land
In the dark of a Georgia night
And turned into a field on the outskirts of
A town that had no lights
A town that had no lights

“Oh Preacher, listen to me,” said the Deacon
“Listen to him,” said the deacon’s wife
“You can’t have no revival meetin’
In a town that’s got no lights
And this town’s got no lights

“Oh, Satan get behind me,” said the Preacher
“I’m gonna show you what the Lord can do.
If we can’t wake this, shake this town
We’ll have the rocks singin’ ‘fore we’re through
We’ll have the rocks singin’ ‘fore we’re through!”
And everybody said:

(Chorus)
Allelujia! Show ‘em what the Lord can do!
Allelujia! Show ‘em what the Lord can do!
He raised me from the dead
And He can raise you, too!

Well they all fell to, and the raised the tent
And they put up all the chairs
When the Preacher climbed the podium
You know lightening split the air
As if the Son of God was there!

“Now rocks, listen to me,” said the Preacher
“Trees, you listen, too
Echo these sounds to the folks in town
And say ‘the Spirit’s comin’ after you!
You know the Spirit’s comin’ after you!’”

(Chorus)

Well like fire and ice that Preacher’s words
Went triplin’ through the town
Broke a few windows, like a small earthquake
Even knocked a few buildin’s down
You know he knocked a few buildin’s down!

“Now people, wake up!” said the Preacher
“See the error of your ways
Open them doors, turn on your lights
‘Cause I ain’t goin’ away
‘Til every soul is saved!”

(Chorus)

Well one by one the lights came on
And the first to come outside
Were the dogs and the cats
And the kids in their pajamas
Seems the rest just wanted to hide
You know the rest just wanted to hide

“Now people, listen!” said the Preacher
“Crawl out of those graves
Death can only hold you if you let it
‘Cause the stone’s been rolled away
The stone’s been rolled away!”

(Chorus)

“Well on Friday Jesus died for you
And on Sunday He was raised
But He didn’t drag His burial clothes along
You know He left them in the grave
He left them in the grave!

Now for thirty-nine days
He walked and He talked
And everybody saw Him there
And on the fortieth day He said;
‘Stand back!’
And He rose up in the air
You know He rose up in the air

(Chorus)

Well lightnin’ flashed and thunder crashed
When the Preacher raised his arms
By this time a huge congregation
Had assembled from the fields and farms
Oh they’d assembled from
The fields and farms

“Now people, listen!” said the Preacher
“Lose your sinnin’ ways!
Lift your hands and raise your hearts
And fill this place with praise!
We’re gonna fill this place with praise!”

MICHAEL
with Cindy Murphy-Orr
I would’ve been Michael
If I’d lived. If I’d had the chance
I would’ve been Michael
But I didn’t fit into your plans

And God only knows how you justify
And God only hears
When an unborn baby dies
And God only knows how you sleep at night
And God only knows
If now and then you hear the babies cry

I would’ve been Susan
If I’d lived, I’d have loved to dance
I would’ve been Susan
But you said I never have the chance

God only knows how safe I felt inside
And God only knows
How painful was the knife
God only knows
God only knows

I would’ve been Ryan
You’d have loved me if you’d let me live
I would’ve been Ryan
You’ll never know the love I had to give
And God only knows
How much I trusted you
And God only knows whatever made you do
What God only knows
God always knows

I would’ve been your child
What might have been
No one else can say
But I would’ve been your child
Somehow we’d have made ourselves a way

It might have been hard
God only knows
It might have been good
God only knows
It might have been
But God only knows

LET FORGIVENESS FLOW

(Chorus)
Let forgiveness flow like a river
From God through you
Oh let forgiveness flow like a river
From God through you (2x)

The heart that can’t forgive
Will never ever heal, oh no
For when the root of bitterness takes hold
It spreads throughout your soul so let

(Chorus)

The one you can’t forgive
Is not the only one who loses
For when the work of bitterness is through
The one who suffers most of all, is you

(Chorus)

SOMEONE ROLLED THE STONE AWAY

Well it was early, early, early
On a sunny Sunday mornin’
When the soldiers finally woke up to the day
They looked at the grave
And they saw that it was emtpy
“Someone rolled the stone away!”

(Chorus)
Oh someone rolled the stone away
Someone rolled the stone away
Someone rolled the stone-a
Someone rolled the stone-a
Someone rolled the stone away
Well they looked at one another
In terror and sheer fright
And said to one another
:Where were you all night?!”

(Chorus)

Well their hearts a started pumpin’
And they were so confused
They shrugged their shoulders
Wrung their hands
Not knowin’ what to do
“Should we go to Caiaphas?
Or should we run away
Save our lives by leavin’
‘Cause we’d surely die to stay!”

(Chorus)

Well Mary and Mary
Were walkin’ by the grave
They saw an angel standin’ there
The stone was rolled away
“What have they done with Jesus?
Where have they taken Him?”
(The day was fast approachin’
And the night was growin’ dim)
“Why do you seek the living
In a place made for the dead?
Don’t you remember
The things that Jesus said?”

(Chorus)

Well they peeked in the grave
And they looked all around
Called the name of Jesus
But they didn’t hear a sound
Then they took to runnin’
And they scarcely touched the ground
And two of the disciples
Were the first ones that they found
And they said

(Chorus)

Well everyone was there
Beneath the mornin’ sky
“Praise be, to God in heaven
Jesus is alive!”

(Chorus)

WHERE IS JESUS NOW?

The faces of the people are all lined with pain
Where is Jesus now?
You hear the same old story
Time and time again
Where is Jesus now?

You say He was good
Say He was kind
He raised the dead, He healed the blind
You say He’s alive, He lives in you
The world is in need
What will you do?

If Jesus lives in you, where is Jesus now?
If Jesus lives in you, where is Jesus now?

Everywhere there are children dying
Everyday
Where is Jesus now?
Do you think that He has given up
And gone away?
Where is Jesus now?
(Refrain)

LOW PRESSURE PORTABLE GOD

Well I’ve got a little god of my own design
I dress him up in feathers
And he looks just fine
I take him off the shelf and dust him
Now and again
And his clothes are interchangeable
With Barbie’s and Ken’s

(Bridge)
And that’s why I love my
Personal and private
Low pressure portable god
Well me and my god you know
We’re just like that
He lets me wear his coat
I let him wear my hat
He’s practical and punctual
And worldly and wise
And, coincidentally, he’s just my size

(Bridge)

Me and my god, you see
We’ve got understandin’ that is
Mutually fair
He comes when I need him
Otherwise it’s just as if he wasn’t there

(Bridge)

Well churchy people bug me
When they poke and they prod
And they ask a lot of questions
‘Bout my personal god
“Well does he love you? Can he save you?
Does he have a plan?”
And I try to tell ‘em that
“He doesn’t think like that!”

(Bridge)

THE BREAD OF LIFE
with Bill Gautsch, Cindy Murphy-Orr, and Dana Russell
“I am, I am, I am the bread of life
“I am, I am the bread of life.”

“How can this be
Do you hear what he’s saying?
He says that he is the bread of life
He says that he is the bread of life.”

“And if you know me
Then you know the Father,
For I and the Father are one.

“Take up your cross and come and follow.”

“This is too hard, Jesus, who can believe it?”
“I do.”
“I do.”
“I do believe He is God.”

“And if you know me
Then you know the Father
For I and the Father are one.

“Take up your cross and come and follow.”

“I do.”
“I do.”
“I do believe He is God.”

“I am. I am. I am.”

TAKE ME DOWN TO THE RIVER

(Bridge)
Take me down the to river
Let it wash over me
Show me what it’s like to be clean
And I will be born again (2x)

(Chorus)
For I am a sinner and I confess
I’m truly lost forever unless you take me

(Bridge)
Oh sweet water flow
River of peace into my soul
Oh sweet water flow
River of peace into my soul
Oh sweet water, oh sweet water
Clean me, free me, take me, make me new

(Chorus)

I AM A CHRISTIAN

It’s when I’m at my weakest
That the world comes callin’
Like a thief it tries to wear me down with lies
And though I know eternity hangs in the balance
Like a fool I dull my conscience
And I close my eyes
But deep down inside I know

I am a soul I’m not a body
I am spirit I’m not flesh
And though the world kills the container
Still the wounds won’t leave me dead

I am a Christian I believe the promises
Believe that Jesus is coming again to take me home
And I will live, I will live forever
I will live, I will live forever
I will live, I will live forever
I will live forever!

We are the children of God
The sons and daughter of the Most High
Creator of all things, and we will praise Him! (Repeat)

WHERE DID THE TIME GO?

Mother, where did the time go?
There are moments that you can’t hold
Try how you might
They’re like sand and water through your hands

Mother, why you starin’ out the window?
Are you watching the kids play
Or watching them grow?
But you cannot hold a whisper in your hand

Though every mother tries from time to time
You stare at those old photographs
And strain to hear the tears and laughter
One more time, before it’s gone forever.
One more time.

Once you said that you would give
Most anything you own if you could
Only sleep the whole night through
Without the baby cryin’

Once upon a time

More than once you wondered if you’d
Fine’ly lost your sanity
And why you ever married me at all
‘Cause look what happened.
And everything that happened, is my fault

Mother, where did the time go?
There are moments that you can’t hold
Try how you might
‘Cause you cannot hold a promise in your hand

Though every mother tries
Every mother cries
Every mother tries, from time to time.

Hello! I don’t know how I missed your e-mail, but I did, and I apologize that it’s been so long. The lyrics to Low Pressure Portable God can be found on my site http://www.davidcrossman.com > Music > Contemporary Christian > Footprints on My Wings, then scroll down to the bottom of the page, where you’ll find the lyric window. Again, I apologize for the delay, it’s inexcusable, still, I hope it’s not too late to be of some use. God bless.

I received this album as a gift about 20+ years ago. I loved it. At the time I was searching whether God was calling me to be a missionary, and really the song Africa is why the pastor, Clint Bahrenberg gave me the album. I did not end up going into missions mainly because I did not have a call on my life in that regards. I came across this site looking for the lyrics to Personal and private low pressure Portable God. I remembered the lyrics being so appt for how some see God today, and wanted to use the lyrics for an upcoming lesson. Thank you for posting your album for all to hear.
