Songs from the Wilderness
By the time Julie and I had been on the road – mostly weekends – for a couple of years, we’d come up with over twenty songs that were begging to be recorded; too many for one CD, according to our arranger, Charlie Miller, and engineer, Matt Schwartz. So, we made it into two albums – Mirror of the Idol’s Eyes and Songs from the Wilderness. Included among these songs are three that were written by dear friends. Arise My Love – which I first heard while drifting down the Nile on a felucca – is Scripture-based and was written by my dear friend Miriam Kook. Beyond the Veil also anchored in Scripture, was written by my almost daughter, Sarah Dahl, and it’s both chilling and beautiful. The Shepherd’s Song was written by a girl named Melissa Poliseno who was about seventeen at the time, as I recall. It’s simplicity and innocence of spirit instantly made it one of my favorites, and Julie sings it perfectly. The last non-David song is Psalm 81 which was put to music by one of my two best friends, Bill Gautsch who has been a light in my life for many years. The album was recorded at SoundMine Studios in South Carolina with Charlie, Cindy Murphy-Orr, Dana Russell, Bill Gautsch, Julie, and Dawn Baird.
Following are full-length MP3s of the songs on this album. If you are able, please donate $1.00 for each track you download to Peer Servants (click the “Donate” tab on their website). They’re a wonderful, worthy, and trustworthy ministry with which we have worked extensively over the years. If you can’t afford the dollar, you’re welcome to download the music at no charge. Simply click the Click here to download text following each title, and right-click the resulting progress bar to download. You may use the songs in ministry, but may not re-record them or profit from them financially in any way. That’s fair, don’t you think?

Songs From the Wilderness

I AM
I am home for the homeless
I am strength for the weak
I am rest for the weary
And I am everything you need
I am love for the abandoned
I am peace for those at war
I am hope for the hopeless
And I am all you’re searching for
But I have come
As far as I can come
For you are not a creature
Of the forest or the field
I have done all that I can do
And to your will
The Lord of Hosts will yield
I am food for the hungry
I am sight for the blind
I am joy for the brokenhearted
Here I stand, just reach and you will find
I am comfort for the frightened
I am riches for the poor
I am freedom for the captive
And I am waiting at the door
NO OTHER GOD
Sung by Julie and David
No other god can
Take you to his heart and hold you
And no other god has told you
You’re the apple of his eye
And no other god can
Listen to the words your heart says
When you are beset by darkness
And no other god has died to save you
You’ll find a love like that love
In no other god
For they are simply gods that you define
The substance of the shadows in your mind
No other god knows
Every fear you feel when you’re alone
No other god has
Spoken words of comfort to your soul
No other god can listen to your prayers
For only God is there
No other god is
Reflected in the world around us
And there isn’t any goddess
Only bits of wood and stone
And no other god reigns
Over all the host of heaven
And no other god has given
Everything he has to prove he loves you
You’ll find a love like that love
In no other god
For they are simply gods of men’s design
Stillborn of the emptiness inside
Chorus
Yahweh, Holy One on high
God of God’s design
Who, despite the thunder of our will
Calls to us in whispers to be still
HERE AMONG THE STONES
Sung by Julie and David
You say you will
Follow His footsteps
Tell me, do you know
Where His footsteps go?
Rocky, rocky
In His footsteps
Nowhere to call home
Here among the stones
Chorus
Make my life a sacrifice
Pleasing in Your sight
Make my heart a haven and
My words and deeds a light
Many, many
Names are called but
Those who will not go
Never will get home
Times of wonder
Times of doubt
Teach us how to grow
Here among the stones
Chorus
ARISE MY LOVE
By Miriam Kook
Arise my love, my fair one
Arise and come with me
For lo, the winter is over and gone
And blossoms are on the tree
I see you through the window
A wall between us stands
Arise and walk slowly towards me
And I’ll give you both of my hands
Jesus, how I love you
And You love me, too
Your face, my love, is comely
Your voice is sweet to hear
And have I ever told you
That I love to have you near?
Arise my love, my fair one
Arise and come with me
For lo, the winter is over and gone
And blossoms are on the tree
BE MY LIGHT
Sung by Cindy Murphy
Be my light
Guide me through the darkness
And when I can’t see
Where You are
Father, speak my name
Take me to Your hiding place
Be my strength
Lift me when I’m weakest
And when I don’t know
Who You are
Father, speak my name
Take me to Your hiding place
Hide me in Your heart
Guide me with Your light
Touch my soul with grace
(Father, keep me safe and warm)
Take me to Your hiding place
LULLABY
Sung by Dana Russell
Lullaby, close your eyes
Go to sleep and dream
And I’ll be there when you rise
You can count on me
Forever I’ll be there
To catch you when you fall
And you can count on me
Anytime at all
Forever I’ll be there
Your shelter in a storm
And when you are cold
I will keep you warm
But a promise is a lie
If it’s not forever
If it’s not whatever
Might get in the way
A promise is a lie
If you fail to keep it
‘Cause promises don’t sleep
And promises don’t die
Lullaby, close your eyes
Now you must be brave
The last day of forever has arrived
And I am going away
I can’t explain
One day you’ll understand
Why I can’t shelter you
Or take your trembling hand
And though I won’t be there
To catch you when you fall
You can count on me
To be there when you call
I wish I could be there
To keep you safe from harm
But when you awake
You will find me gone
BACK TO THE GARDEN
Show me the way back to the garden
I’ve been stumbling blindly
Through the wilderness
And now I need some water
Fill this empty cup with praise
And take these blinders from my eyes
And this stone from my heart
Take this stone from my heart
Show me the way back to the garden
Jesus, fill my spirit with your holiness
And pour Your healing on me
Teach these thirsty lips to pray
And take these blinders from my eyes
And this stone from my heart
Take this stone from my heart
Forgive me, Father I have fallen
But can even You forgive
All these broken promises? (2x)
Show me the way back to the garden
Heaven help this sinner
Who is coming home
And now I need forgiveness
I surrender all demands
Just take this ragged man of sin
And this stone from my heart
Take this stone from my heart
Show me the way back to the garden
PSALM 18
By Bill Gautsch
He delivereth me from my enemies
He lifts me up above
Them that rise up against me
He has delivered me
From the violent man
He has delivered me
From the violent man
Therefore will I give thanks unto Him
And will sing praises to His name
Among the nations, Oh Lord
Among the nations, Oh Lord
And great deliverence
Giveth He to His King
And showeth mercy to His anointed
Even to David, and to his seed
Even to David, and to his seed
Even to David, and to his seed
Forevermore
ONE LONG “GOOD-BYE”
Sung by David, Julie, and Cindy
There are times when it seems
That the world’s one long “good-bye”
A sad montage of faces
With tears in their eyes
Time for one more
Hug and kiss “good-bye”
I have been counting
And dreading the moments
Couldn’t find a second
That would be my friend
But from this minute
Each moment will bring you
Closer to me once again
Even though the time and miles
Keep us asunder
Somehow they can’t keep us apart
Every day the memories
Grow sweeter and sweeter
As you are woven into my heart
As a part of the life that I love
All our time together
Was a celebration
You have come to mean so much
And in that meaning
I have seen the Lord
There are times when it seems
That the world’s one long “good-bye”
A sad montage of faces
With tears in their eyes
Time for one more
Hug and kiss “good-bye”
LET FORGIVENESS FLOW
Let forgiveness flow like a river
From God through you
Let forgiveness flow like a river
From God through you
The heart that can’t forgive
Will never, ever heal. no, no
For when the root of bitterness takes hold
It spreads throughout your soul, so let
Let forgiveness flow like a river
From God through you
Oh, let forgiveness flow like a river
From God through you
The one you can’t forgive
Is not the only one who loses
For when the work of bitterness is through
The one who suffers most of all…is you
So let forgiveness flow like a river
From God through you
Oh, let forgiveness flow like a river
From God through you.
I WILL FOLLOW YOU
By Mike Weed and David Crossman
Sung by David and Cindy
I will follow You wherever You may go
And I’ll only follow where You lead, my Lord
I will follow You wherever You may go
For Thy way is life and all truth is in Thy word
Though the winds blow, the storms come
The tempests do rage, I will follow You
To Thee my life is due,
I’ll only follow You
Wherever the road may go
I will follow you, my Lord
Every time you turn around
You will find me there
Wherever the road may lead
Even unto Calvary
God give me the strength I’ll need
To climb those stairs
I will follow You
Wherever You may go
And I’ll only follow
Where You lead, my Lord
I will follow You
Wherever You may go
For Thy way is life
And all truth is in Thy word
Though the winds blow
The storms come
The tempests to rage
I will follow You
To Thee my life is do
I’ll only follow you
Repeat
