Mirror of the Idol’s Eyes
By the time Julie and I had been on the road – mostly weekends – for a couple of years, we’d come up with over twenty songs that were begging to be recorded; too many for one CD, according to our arranger, Charlie Miller, and engineer, Matt Schwartz. So, we made it into two albums – Mirror of the Idol’s Eyes and Songs from the Wilderness. Included among these songs are three that were written by dear friends. Arise My Love – which I first heard while drifting down the Nile on a felucca – is Scripture-based and was written by my dear friend Miriam Kook. Beyond the Veil also anchored in Scripture, was written by my almost daughter, Sarah Dahl, and it’s both chilling and beautiful. The Shepherd’s Song was written by a girl named Melissa Poliseno who was about seventeen at the time, as I recall. It’s simplicity and innocence of spirit instantly made it one of my favorites, and Julie sings it perfectly. The last non-David song is Psalm 81 which was put to music by one of my two best friends, Bill Gautsch who has been a light in my life for many years. The album was recorded at SoundMine Studios in South Carolina with Charlie, Cindy Murphy-Orr, Dana Russell, Bill Gautsch, Julie, and Dawn Baird.

JUST DOWN THE ROAD
Just down the road from here
There is a place of rest
Just one more river to cross
Out of the wilderness
Home is where my heart runs
When the storms set in
And I seek the shelter of
My Father’s arms
Holding me so close
I can feel His heart
Beating with the rhythm of eternity
This is where my hope lies
When my fears prevail
‘Til I’m overtaken by a still so deep
Cradled in the promise of what I believe
Is just down the road
(Chorus)
Just down the road
Just around the next bend
Is a place my heart’s been seeking
In a world that never ends
Just down the road
Just a lifetime away
Father find me faithful
In the life I live today
Just down the road from here
There is a place of peace
Just one more mountain to climb
Until my soul’s release
(Chorus)
Father find me faithful
In the world I face today
LIVE AS I PROFESS
Oh Lord help me live as I profess to believe
Lord and may the things that I believe be true
And where I misbelieve Lord, show me You
‘Cause I’m not right
I’m as wrong as any man
My tendency
Is to manufacture something to believe
So I take You and I dress You up like me
And I take a little here
And I take a little there
And I “Amen” and I ape when I agree
But if something doesn’t fit
In the mold I made for You
Then I write it off as bad theology
‘Cause a challenge is anathema to me
So Father open up my eyes
Even if you have to pry
Even if you have to tear my faith apart
‘Cause the thing I can’t abide
Is the thought that deep inside me
Is an idol that I’ve set up in my heart
And though I bow and scrape
And I call it by your name
If it’s not You, it’s just idolotry
And nothing that is worthy of belief.
SHEPHERD’S SONG*
(By Melissa Poliseno)
He’s got a hundred sheep
But still He knows if He’s missing one
With tears upon His face
The search has just begun
Oh He calls out loud
And He looks around
But the lamb refused to come
He says: “I cannot bear to lose you my lamb
Don’t you wander far, oh precious one.”
So with determination strong
The Shepherd won’t give up
And the other ninety-nine somehow
Just aren’t enough
He says: “Come to me, oh can’t you see
That I need you in my hand?
And I won’t give up until I find my lamb.
“And oh my precious lamb
Don’t you wander far
Listen to my voice
Oh my precious lamb
Don’t you wander far
Oh precious one.”
Out of the darkness
There came a lamb
And it began to feed
From the Shepherd’s hand
And the Shepherd held him tight
Oh He held that lamb so tight
And then he cried,
“Don’t ever let me lose you again.
Oh don’t you wander far
Don’t you wander far
Don’t you wander far
Oh precious lamb.”
BY THE POWER
By the power of the Spirit
Not by the power of the world
Heaven is closer, I will attain it
By the power of the Spirit I am assured
God take my dreams
They’re only ashes
Take my pride, it’s only clay
You are my hope
Become my passion
Let Your desire be mine today
‘Cause this world is not my home
And I cannot be overcome
And heaven has already won
When I see through the eyes of faith! (2X)
I’LL PRAY FOR YOU
“It’s much too cold in here.”
“No, it’s much too hot.”
“The sermon’s much too long.”
“No, it’s much too short.
”“I don’t like these foldin’ chairs.”
“And I don’t like the pews.”
“I don’t like singin’ hymns. Do you?”
(Chorus)
“Well I don’t like and I don’t want
And I don’t think God would approve
Of anything I don’t intend to do
I think you’ll find it’s only pride
That makes you think the way you do
And so tonight, I’ll say a prayer for you.”
“Everyone should loosen up!”
“Men should all wear ties.”
“Jesus only drank grape juice.”
“No, He just drank wine.”
“I don’t like the color scheme.”
“And I don’t like the lights.”
“I’m gonna pray for you tonight.
(Chorus)
“Cause I don’t like and I don’t want
And I don’t think God would approve
Of anything I don’t intend to do
And I don’t think you’re really saved
‘Cause your so full of pride
That you can’t see that God is on my side!”
BEYOND THE VEIL
By Sarah Rowan
I look across the courtyard
See many standing there
Rooted in tradition
With blind and empty stares
My eyes turn toward the Holy Place
My soul is filled with joy
For there are people singing
In the presence of the Lord
“Send a shower of glory
Make Your presence known
Breathe peace overflowing
Into these hearts of stone
Break us and mold us
Into images of You
Holy and anointed
Strengthened and renewed.”
Then I feel a touch
And know that it is Him
He leads me to a hiding place
A place I’ve never been
We walk beyond the veil
No longer can I stand
For I am drenched with Holy fire
Consuming from within
My cup is running over
My spirit is renewed
The room is filled with glory
But why are there so few?
Oo I want to go, I need to be
With You beyond the veil
Oo I want to go, I need to be
With You beyond the veil.
CUT OUT THAT PREACHIN’
Oh you say:
“Cut out that preachin’, baby, I don’t have time
Don’t want those crazy questions keepin’ me up all night.”
And you say:“I know all I need to know.
Oh baby, I know all I need to know.”
You say you don’t want to know about Him
And you, don’t want to hear
That Someone up there loves you
And He wants to draw you near
But you say:“I know all I need to know.
Oh baby, I know all I need to know.”
Well you’re too cool to listen to the message
You don’t believe the things I have to say
Well sister you had better get your headphones on
For your soul might be required of you today!
You say you’ve gone too far for savin’
And I, I shouldn’t try
But if my dog was drownin’ well I’d sure toss him a line
And how much more do you think I’d do for you?
Oh how much more do you think I’d do for you?
It wasn’t long ago that I was like you
So blind I didn’t know that I was lost
I’d lost all sense of reason and direction
‘Til one day I ran into that Old rugged cross
Now my eyes are open
Now I’ve got my sight
I’ve come out of the darkness
And I’m carryin’ a light
But you say: “Cut out that preachin, baby.”
But I just can’t, I want you to hear the good news
And be as happy as I am
And see what God has done in Christ for you
GATES OF JERUSALEM
Oh my Lord I often cry out at night
When my fears are
Awaken by the many winds that rush
Wild through my soul
Father, let me hear You speak to me
Tell me You love me
And let me know that I have not been
Believing in vain
Open the gates of Jerusalem
For the King is coming
Break the bonds of the enemy
Let the King come in!
Father, Father!
Let the King come in!
Father, Father!
Let the King come in!
In my day of trouble He is my rock
And my refuge
My strength and my salvation
Of whom shall I be afraid?
“Turn to me for I am lowly
And I will be gracious
I will guard your life and rescue you
Whom shall you fear?” (2X)
WHATEVER IS TRUE
Whatever is true, whatever is noble
Whatever is right, whatever is pure
Whatever is lovely. Whatever is admirable
And worthy of praise, and worthy of praise
Think about these things
And the God,
And the God of peace will be with you.
NOW IT IS NIGHT
Now it is night
The end of the day
Pick up the pieces
And put them away
Pick up the pieces
And put them away
There’s nothing to fear
‘Cause Somebody cares
Your Father in heaven’s
As close as a prayer
Your Father in heaven’s
As close as a prayer
So lay your heavy burden
Down it’s time
To close your eyes and sleep
The world will keep on turning
‘Til you wake
Don’t take your cares to bed
Pull up the covers
Turn out the light
Bathe all your wounds
In the balm of the night
Bathe all your wounds
In the balm of the night
Father I pray that
Your blessings will fall
Just like a blanket
To cover us all
Just like a blanket
To cover us all
So lay your heavy burden
Down it’s time
To close your eyes and sleep
The world will keep on turning
‘Til you wake
Don’t take your cares to bed
Now it is night
The end of the day
Pick up the pieces
And put ‘em away
Pick up the pieces
And put them away.
